This Week in Bluegrass: October 26 - November 01

Dollywood is hosting bluegrass this week, and it is not what you think.

The Harvest Festival in Pigeon Forge runs through the end of October, and Mountain Highway is on the bill. If you know Mountain Highway only from festival appearances or YouTube clips, you are missing the thing that makes them work: they sound like they are having more fun than anyone else on the stage. Old-school bluegrass with actual groove, the kind of band that makes you wonder why more people are not playing it this way. Dollywood is a theme park, yes, but the Harvest Festival has become a legitimate bluegrass draw. You get the band, you get the rides, you get parking that does not require you to parallel park in some downtown lot at midnight. If you are within five hours and have not taken this seriously, this is the move for the long weekend.

The Tuesday String Band is living on the road

They played three Oregon towns on Monday. By Wednesday they will be in Colorado. This is not unusual for touring bands, but it is worth paying attention to because it tells you where the circuit actually works right now. The Ruins in Shaniko, Oregon on Monday and Tuesday, Main Street Tattoo in Independence on Monday, Block 15 Brewing in Corvallis on Monday. All three in one night, which means they are either doing a routing that a booking agent drew up or they know someone with a van and a very flexible schedule. The point is this: if you are in Oregon's Willamette Valley and you can make one of these shows, you can see Tuesday String Band in a real venue, not a festival stage. Shaniko is a ghost town that has become a destination for the slow jam crowd. The Ruins is exactly what it sounds like: an old building with good bones and better acoustics. This is where you actually hear the band.

Ricky Skaggs in Lincoln, Nebraska

Pinnacle Bank Arena on Monday night. This is a 5,500-seat building, which means it is not a small room, but Skaggs still draws the kind of crowd that fills it. If you have never seen him live and you have the drive time available, this is the kind of show that reminds you why he matters. He is not a relic. He is still cutting heads.

The Stranahan in Toledo has a real night

Monday features both Old Crow Medicine Show and The Steel Wheels in the same venue. Old Crow is doing six shows this week, so they are in tour mode, hitting multiple states in rapid succession. The Stranahan is a 500-seat room with good sound and a bar that does not try too hard. If you are in northwest Ohio and you have not been here, this is a reason to go. Both bands in one night is not common scheduling. Whoever booked this understood what they were doing.

Newberry and Verch at a house concert in Manzanita, Oregon

Monday night. This is the kind of show that does not advertise itself much because it does not have to. House concerts work on word of mouth and email lists. Newberry and Verch are doing six shows this week, and they are the kind of traditional and old-time players who actually sound better in a living room than they do on a festival stage. The intimacy matters. If you know someone in the Manzanita area or you are passing through the Oregon coast, ask around. These shows exist. You just have to know where to look.

Magoo at WDVX in Knoxville, Tuesday night

WDVX is a blue-collar music hall in the heart of Knoxville. Magoo is doing seven shows this week, which means they are working hard and moving fast. Tuesday night in Knoxville is a good night to catch a band that is still hungry. The room is small, the sound is clean, and there are no pretenses.

The week is heavy on the road warriors. Martha Spencer, Tuesday String Band, Magoo, Old Crow Medicine Show: these are bands that have decided that October into November is their season. They are not resting between festivals. They are grinding through small rooms and mid-sized venues, building a fan base one town at a time. If you are tired of waiting for the big festival lineups to drop next spring, these are the shows that matter right now. This is where the real touring circuit lives.
